Will Peter Parker become Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, currently, in development by Insomniac Games, Peter Parker will be utilizing the symbiote costume originally shown in the Marvel Comics series: Secret Wars. In the comics Peter received the costume on Battleworld, eventually bringing it to Earth and wearing it as he fought crime in New York City. Eventually, Peter parted with the suit when he learned that it was a symbiote that was draining his energy. The alien costume storyline was then adapted in Spider-Man: The Animated Series from the 1990s but with a twist. In this adaptation, we saw that the symbiote made Peter more violent and angry causing him to get rid of the suit. In the Ultimate Universe Peter briefly becomes Venom when the suit reaches a higher level of bonding with him. And finally, in The Spider’s Shadow, a what-if style comic released in 2021, readers see what would happen if Peter had never given up the symbiote leading to him becoming a horrific murderer.
This escalation of stories showing the effect that the symbiote can have on its wearer could potentially be traced to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. At this point, there has been no indication of whether or not Eddie Brock will take the role of Venom as he does in the comics. Insomniac has included easter eggs showing that he exists in this universe and even works at The Daily Bugle. The only information that has been released on the black suit is that Harry has some involvement with the suit, Peter will wear the suit, and Venom will appear. Of course, it would not be a surprise to see Harry wearing the suit, potentially being its first host, however after he loses the suit, and Peter wears it there’s no way of knowing what will happen next.
Yuri Lowenthal, the voice of Peter Parker, has claimed that Peter’s experience with the black suit will be akin to a drug addict looking for a fix. With the inclusion of two Spider-Men, it would make sense that the game would have a confrontation between the pair. The gameplay trailer showed Peter acting hostile towards Miles foreshadowing a fall for Peter. The only question is how far will Peter fall? Will Peter become the villain of his second game? Would Insomniac make Peter a murderer? Will Peter get rid of the suit before the worst-case scenario? It isn’t completely off the table that Peter could become the classic villain if only for a boss fight.
Of course, the game could still introduce Eddie Brock to become Venom in the third act of the game. He exists in the universe and could have a beef with Peter Parker that we have yet to see. Peter in the games does not still work in the news, instead planning to become a teacher (revealed in the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic) which could change the reason Eddie hates Peter from the comic origin. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would have plenty of time within its runtime to introduce Eddie and establish a rivalry between Peter and him, just as they set up Otto Octavious throughout the last game.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is sure to be a huge story just considering the number of story details currently released: including but not limited to The Lizard, Harry Osborne, Venom, and Kraven the Hunter. When the game finally releases this Fall players will get to see how the mystery of Venom and who may become him will play out.
